GUWAHATI: Renowned classical dancer and cultural icon Sonal Mansingh was conferred with the Srimanta Sankardev Award for the year 2023 at a ceremonial function held in Guwahati on Thursday, June 12.
Speaking at the event, Assam Minister of Cultural Affairs Bimal Borah said the award is a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of Srimanta Sankardev, whose works have shaped Assam’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
“Today, Hon'ble Governor Shri @Laxmanacharya54 Ji, in presence of HCM Dr. @himantabiswa dangoriya & Hon'ble Union Minister Shri @sarbanandsonwal dangoriya, presented the prestigious Srimanta Sankardev Award, 2023 to legendary classical danceuse and Guru Dr. @sonal_mansingh Ji in Guwahati,” he posted on X regarding the occasion.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also shared a message on the platform, stating his pleasure in attending the award ceremony and congratulating Mansingh on receiving the honour.
Mansingh, a Rajya Sabha member and Padma Vibhushan awardee, has had a distinguished career in Indian classical dance, encompassing Bharatanatyam and Odissi. Her dedication to the arts and her efforts in spreading Indian cultural values have earned her national and international acclaim.
The award was presented to her by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, while the event also saw the attendance of Padma Bhushan awardee and Sattriya dance exponent Jatin Goswami, alongside members of the Assam cabinet, MLAs, and other dignitaries.
Instituted by the Assam government, the Srimanta Sankardev Award is considered one of the highest civilian honours in the state. It recognises individuals who have made notable contributions in the fields of art, culture, and social service, in keeping with the spiritual and cultural ideals of 15th-century saint and reformer Srimanta Sankardev.
