GUWAHATI: Riyan Parag has been named captain of the Assam cricket team for the upcoming five-match One-Day series against Namibia, scheduled to begin on June 21. The series will be played entirely at the FNB Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
The development will mark an international assignment for Assam, offering players an opportunity to compete in unfamiliar African conditions. Parag’s appointment followed an IPL 2025 season with Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 393 runs at a strike rate of 166.53. His leadership in the absence of Sanju Samson during the IPL further established his credentials as a capable leader.
The 23-year-old has been a consistent performer across formats. In First-Class cricket, he has scored 2,042 runs in 33 matches. His List A record includes 1,735 runs and 53 wickets in 50 games, while in the T20 format, he has amassed 3,115 runs and taken 48 wickets across 137 matches.
The Assam squad selected for the tour includes experienced players such as Denish Das, Akash Sengupta and Parvej Musaraf. The team also features a mix of promising talents and multiple wicketkeeping options, with four keepers named in the travelling group. Assam’s last competitive outing came in the Indian domestic circuit, and the series in Namibia is expected to serve as vital exposure for players aiming to break through at the national level.
